Live from TIFF: Iron Ladies of Liberia

Iron Ladies of Liberia ***
Directed by Daniel Junge
77 Minutes

I bought a ticket for the good documentary "Iron Ladies of Liberia" because I was able to squeeze it in between "Poor Boy's Game" and "Smiley Face." I heard some good buzz about it from people on lines, and I though I would check it out. And it was well worth the trip. This is an insightful and very enjoyable documentary, part of TIFF's "Why Democracy?" series. This is the only real documentary I've seen at the festival, because I have a hard time including "Captain Mike Across America" in that category. But that's a different review, which I have posted a few days ago.

I'm not going to get into specifics, and this will be a rather short write-up, but Daniel Junge manages to get footage from the first year of office by the new Liberia president-the first woman-Ellen Johnson-Sirlea. Her goal is to get Liberia out of third world status, and to pay off the national debt, which is huge. I don't remember the phrase they used that made half the crowd mutter in disgust, but it was quite massive. And we see her hire a bunch of other women for her cabinet-hence the title "Iron Ladies"-women that are made of steel and force and have a thick foundation. The film is loaded with very inspiring scenes, and great looks at cabinet meeting which are filled with humor and moments of real power. I think the funnies bit-at the screening-was the first time Sirlea met George W. Bush, and when he came on the screen he got such a massive reaction-lots of people laughing just because he was on the screen, and because he seemed a bit distracted in that Bush way. But when he agreed to help Liberia, the movie got a remarkable applause. Seeing this after "Poor Boy's Game" was like watching two audiences get so empowered by what was happened on the screen that it really highlighted the festival experience.

"Iron Ladies of Liberia" is a very enjoyable documentary. I have a feeling that New York audiences will get to see it at Film Forum in about a year. It's one of those docs that they end up screening sooner or later. And it's worth the trip, and a neat look at how democracy is created and then attempted to maintain.
