Live from TIFF: Unfinished Sky

Unfinished Sky ***
Directed by Peter Duncan
92 Minutes

MINI REVIEW-

Short, gritty, and yet ultimately a fine love story, "Unfinished Sky" tells about John (played well by William McInnes), a farmer in Australia who lives alone after the death of his wife-oddly like "The Visitor." He has his habits, his routine, and only loves his dog Elvis. And then he meets Tahmeena (played by Monic Hendrickx), a badly beaten up woman that finds herself on his property. And he tries to help her and figure out what she is doing there.

"Unfinished Sky" plays like a mystery, looks like a drama, and is at heart a love story, and is a success at all of these genres. The two lead performers, who are on screen together almost the whole time, are quiet and gentle. The film is sweet and full of humor before going on darker territory, and its quite entertaining. We see them live in this small bubble for a while, until the outside world breaks in and begins to ruin their lives, and their chances at living. This was a fine film, merging cultures that are usually so distant from one another, very much like the unfinished puzzle on John's coffee table of, you guessed it, a sky.
